Flood alert - Please help!

Torrential rains, rising floods and landslides are currently affecting millions of people in Asia and Africa. While Canadians are experiencing a hotter than average summer, vulnerable families in places like India and Bangladesh are dealing with devastating floods, made more complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In many parts of the world, flooding is a yearly occurrence. It generally takes place during the rainy season and can even be important for agriculture in the region. But this year’s flooding is exceptionally destructive.

The UN’s Meteorological Organization reports that rainfall has been significantly higher this year in parts of India. East Africa is reporting the worst flooding it has seen in 40 years. Experts in Bangladesh say this year’s flood will be the worst in decades.

Almost 10 million people have been affected by the floods in Asia this year and over a million have been displaced. It is likely that the most vulnerable in these populations will face the harshest effects.

The coronavirus has compounded the damage by slowing the distribution of supplies. Border closings, failing economies and lockdowns have made it difficult to get aid to those who need it most. And people forced from their homes into crowded shelters are at a higher risk of the spread of disease.
