Gaza Humanitarian Emergency

The Humanitarian Coalition is extremely concerned by the escalation of violence in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel, and the catastrophic repercussions this violence is having on innocent lives. Thousands of civilians -- including children -- are suffering as a result of countless attacks, hunger, dehydration, sickness and the absence of healthcare and humanitarian assistance. In Gaza, water, food, fuel and medical supplies are running out and thousands of people are now at risk.

CANADIANS RESPOND GENEROUSLY TO THE HUMANITARIAN NEEDS IN GAZA

From October 23 to November 12, 2023, eligible donations made to the Humanitarian Coalition and our members were matched by the Government of Canada.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of generosity and support that our Gaza Humanitarian Emergency appeal has received. The Humanitarian Coalition will continue accepting donations for the ongoing emergency needs in Gaza and the West Bank. Please note that donations made after Nov. 12 are greatly welcomed, but will no longer be matched by the government.

We are glad to announce that with the strong support of our members, we have raised over $28 million for the Gaza Humanitarian Emergency, including a $13.77 million match from the Government of Canada. Our work continues!

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has created a humanitarian emergency.

Latest estimates in Gaza indicate that more than 42,010 people have been killed and more than 97,720 are injured. Access to necessities such as food, water, fuel and medical supplies has been almost completely cut off.  More than one million people have been forced to leave their homes to escape the fighting. Hospitals in Gaza have been badly damaged, leaving many with no electrical service and facing shortages of critical medical supplies.

The loss of medical facilities and infrastructure is putting vulnerable people such as pregnant women and infants at higher risk. Humanitarian needs are also growing in the West Bank.

The four pillars of humanitarian assistance

→ Humanity – the first priority of aid is to alleviate suffering by providing support to those in need.
Neutrality – the Humanitarian Coalition and its members will not endorse positions taken by either side in the conflict and will confine its activities solely to providing aid where needed.
Impartiality aid will be provided to those in need, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age and sexual orientation.
→ Independencehumanitarian organizations are bound to follow international humanitarian law (IHL) and can refuse to take part in activities that violate the principles of these laws.

The Response

The Humanitarian Coalition's member agencies believe that action must be taken to protect children and other civilians who have no role in the conflict.

Our member agencies are well established in Gaza and the West Bank and have connections with local charities and other organizations to ensure that funds raised from Canada are spent solely for humanitarian purposes. We are operating as best as we can, distributing pre-positioned stocks of food, water, and health kits. But these supplies are running out.

As humanitarian access is restored, we will scale up our response swiftly and effectively to deliver:

  • Emergency food
  • Drinking water
  • Shelter and household items, like blankets and kitchen kits
  • Medical care and supplies
  • Hygiene and dignity kits
  • Emergency cash or vouchers for basic needs
  • Psychological support for affected families

Give now to ensure humanitarian aid is delivered as soon as possible.
