Humanitarian Needs
On 31 August 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan. This was followed by a magnitude 5.2 aftershock on 2nd September that hit northeastern Afghanistan.
More than 2,205 deaths and 3,640 injuries have been reported, with figures expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue. The earthquakes affected approximately 500,000 people, many of whom are in remote, mountainous areas that are now difficult to reach because landslides and debris blocked key access routes.
Many of the people affected urgently need shelter, essential household items, medical care, drinking water, food, sanitation facilities and mental health support. Women, girls and children who have been displaced also face protection risks.
Humanitarian Response
Islamic Relief Afghanistan has been working in the country since 1992, delivering emergency, humanitarian and development programming. CARE has worked in Afghanistan for more than 60 years, providing primary healthcare, nutrition, sexual and gender-based violence support, humanitarian response, education and women's economic empowerment in 12 provinces.
Islamic Relief will respond in the Chawkay and Nurgal districts of Kunar province, where the majority of houses have been destroyed. They will establish two temporary health facilities and 28 latrines, provide cooking equipment and blankets to 610 households, and distribute cash support to 500 households.
CARE will respond in Nurgal district to address gaps in cash assistance and health services. This includes distributing cash support and listening to people’s feedback after they receive aid. CARE will also source and deliver health supplies to medical facilities.
Both organizations will ensure that women are part of their response teams and that gender equality is prioritized, improving program access for women and girls.

Our response to small and medium-scale disasters is co-funded by Global Affairs Canada, the member agency delivering the assistance, and donations to the Humanitarian Coalition. Your gift will help us be ready for the next disaster. Donate today.
