Crisis In East Africa
Crisis In East Africa
Conflict, climate change and hunger are putting lives at risk in countries across East Africa. The conflict in Sudan is making a fragile situation worse in many places. Millions of people have been forced from their homes and are in urgent need of basic necessities to survive.
Severe drought continues to plague Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, where more than 23 million people are without reliable access to food and water. Elsewhere, conflict in Sudan has forced more than 1.4 million people to flee their homes to escape the fighting. This exodus is putting an added strain on neighbouring countries, such as South Sudan, Chad, DR Congo and Central African Republic. Women, children and the elderly face the greatest risks.
Together with our members, we have raised more than $5 million over the course of the month of June -- which has been matched by the Government of Canada for another $5 million, for a total of more than $10 million -- to provide emergency assistance to people affected by conflict, climate and hunger in East Africa.
