Humanitarian Needs

Two cyclones hit Madagascar in just ten days, killing dozens of people and affecting more than 470,000.

Entire neighbourhoods in Toamasina were devastated and communities have been cut off from food, clean water and health care. Homes, schools, health facilities and livelihoods have been destroyed, and rising floodwaters are increasing the risk of disease outbreaks as thousands of families are left without shelter or basic services.

Humanitarian Response

Our members Canadian Foodgrains Bank and Save the Children are responding to this crisis.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank is responding through their member World Renew, in partnership with Sampan'Asa Momba ny Fampandrosoana (SAF-FJKM). SAF-FJKM has more than fifty years of experience providing humanitarian responses in Madagascar.

SAF-FJKM will provide rice, legumes and oil to 665 households for three months. They are also distributing emergency cash transfers of 280,000 MGA (90 CAD) to families affected by the cyclones.

Save the Children has operated in Madagascar since 2016, with 70 staff members working on nutrition, health, child protection and other sectors.

Save the Children will provide emergency cash assistance to 800 households; families will receive 140,000 MGA (45 CAD) per month for three months. The organization will also support at least 3,500 children and caregivers with mental health support, safe spaces where children can learn and process trauma, and other services to protect children.
