Humanitarian Needs

Heavy rains in Kenya in October 2023 caused rivers to overflow, resulting in flooding and landslides in 36 out of the 47 counties in the country. About 160 people were killed and over 500,000 people from over 100,000 households were displaced.

There was also widespread damage to key infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, electricity power lines, and health facilities, along with the destruction of crops and loss of livestock. As well, the floods destroyed or damaged houses in many areas, with many families losing their belongings.

Displaced families found shelter in camps or with friends and relatives, leading to overcrowded spaces and increasing protection risks for children.

Humanitarian Response

Through Oxfam Canada and Plan Canada, as much as 14,230 people (about 2,300 households) will get improved access to safe and adequate water, sanitation facilities, dignity and hygiene items, insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

There will also be improved food security through multi-purpose cash assistance and targeted supplementary feeding programs. Protection against gender-based violence will also be provided for displaced survivors, as well as public child protection information and awareness raising sessions.
