The Humanitarian Coalition welcomes the first phase of the ceasefire in Gaza and calls for definitive and lasting peace. We remain extremely concerned by the massive humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank, including the devastating famine in Gaza City. Millions of civilians — including children — are still suffering as a result of countless attacks, hunger, dehydration, sickness and the absence of healthcare and humanitarian assistance. Our members are moving fast to scale up their responses as humanitarian access increases.

Gaza ceasefire brings respite but living conditions remain catastrophic

Latest estimates in Gaza indicate that more than 67,000 people have been killed and more than 170,000 are injured. Access to necessities such as food, water, fuel and medical supplies has been almost completely cut off. At the same time, the West Bank is facing rising violence, school closures, and an economic crisis that are taking a growing toll on families and children.

In Gaza, more than two million people have been forced to leave their homes to escape the fighting. Hospitals in Gaza have been badly damaged, leaving many with no electrical service and facing shortages of critical medical supplies. The loss of medical facilities and infrastructure is putting vulnerable people such as pregnant women and infants at higher risk.

Meanwhile, in the West Bank, escalating violence, severe movement restrictions and collapsing essential services are cutting families off from healthcare, education and livelihoods — leaving children increasingly at risk.

The four pillars of humanitarian assistance

→ Humanity – the first priority of aid is to alleviate suffering by providing support to those in need.
Neutrality – the Humanitarian Coalition and its members will not endorse positions taken by either side in the conflict and will confine its activities solely to providing aid where needed.
Impartiality aid will be provided to those in need, regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age and sexual orientation.
→ Independencehumanitarian organizations are bound to follow international humanitarian law (IHL) and can refuse to take part in activities that violate the principles of these laws.

CANADIANS RESPOND GENEROUSLY TO THE HUMANITARIAN NEEDS IN GAZA

From October 23 to November 12, 2023, eligible donations made to the Humanitarian Coalition and our members were matched by the Government of Canada.

We are so grateful for the outpouring of generosity and support that our Gaza Humanitarian Emergency appeal has received. The Humanitarian Coalition will continue accepting donations for the ongoing emergency needs in Gaza and the West Bank. Please note that donations made after Nov. 12 are greatly welcomed, but will no longer be matched by the government.

We are glad to announce that with the strong support of our members, we have raised over $28 million for the Gaza Humanitarian Emergency, including a $13.77 million match from the Government of Canada. Our work continues!

The Response

The Humanitarian Coalition's member agencies believe that action must be taken to protect children and other civilians who have no role in the conflict.

Our member agencies are well established in Gaza and the West Bank and have connections with local charities and other organizations to ensure that funds raised from Canada are spent solely for humanitarian purposes. We are operating as best as we can, distributing pre-positioned stocks of food, water, and health kits. But these supplies are running out.

As humanitarian access is restored, we will scale up our response swiftly and effectively to deliver:

  • Emergency food
  • Drinking water
  • Shelter and household items, like blankets and kitchen kits
  • Medical care and supplies
  • Hygiene and dignity kits
  • Emergency cash or vouchers for basic needs
  • Psychological support for affected families
