The Humanitarian Coalition announced that Oxfam Canada will use $452,562 from the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF) to help more than 20,000 people recently displaced by conflict in Sudan.
The need
Since mid-January, military operations in North Darfur have forced large numbers of people to flee their homes and seek refuge elsewhere in the country. Initial assessments have identified 21,690 internally displaced people (IDP) in the village of Sortony alone, with UN reports suggesting that figure could reach as high as 72,000 as more people continue to flee. The most urgent needs are access to safe drinking water and sanitation services, but food, security and education are also needed.
The response
Oxfam Canada will provide water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, including trucking in water, rehabilitating and drilling new hand pumps, building 200 emergency temporary latrines, distributing hygiene kits to 1,000 households and creating awareness for proper hygiene practices.
In addition to this, Oxfam will assess the needs and possibility of providing cash transfers to support identified food gaps.
The funds for this response are broken down as follows:
- $337,278 from Global Affairs Canada
- $47,250 from the Humanitarian Coalition
- $68,034 from Oxfam Canada
