The Humanitarian Coalition would like to extend its welcome to Stéphane Dion and Marie-Claude Bibeau, the new ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Development, respectively, appointed yesterday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“We look forward to working with Ms. Bibeau and Mr. Dion and their respective teams on providing humanitarian aid to those who need it most,” says Nicolas Moyer, Executive Director of the Humanitarian Coalition. “This new government has set ambitious plans to increase its international leadership role and especially in helping refugees, including those from the current Syrian crisis. As trusted and longstanding partners of the Canadian government, we are enthusiastic about exploring opportunities to work with the departments on all initiatives that help save lives, alleviate human suffering and preserve the dignity of people affected by disasters.”
Canada has a long history of helping people around the world in times of need, most recently in response to events such as Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the earthquake in Nepal, the recent Ebola outbreak in Western Africa or Syrian refugees.
Recent global trends show that disasters are changing, that they are more frequent and affect more people than ever. Adaptability, innovation and ingenuity are paramount in responding to these crises. As a joint Canadian approach to humanitarian response, the Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies – CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam-Québec, Plan Canada, Save the Children Canada – are in a unique position to provide aid during times of need.
