Families In Deed at the gala thao choi

Donor Profile: Vietnam refugee leads fundraising event for Syrian refugees

The Humanitarian Coalition would not be successful without the generous support of dedicated donors like Thao Choi. Ms. Choi watched the Syrian Refugee Crisis and wanted to take action, so she and the Families In Deed Committee organized a special fundraising New Year's Masquerade Charity Gala in January 2016 in support of the Syrian Refugees, and raised $22,000.

The group chose the Humanitarian Coalition specifically because its member agencies were helping refugees outside of Canada. The Government of Canada’s matching fund and the fact that 85% of money raised goes directly to the cause were also factors in the group’s decision to choose the Humanitarian Coalition.

If you are interested in organizing a group fundraiser, just like Ms. Choi did, visit our group and event fundraising page for all the information.

Saynab, Somalian girl

Member Profile: Save the Children Canada

Save the Children works in 120 countries to ensure that all children – particularly those hardest to reach – attain the right to survival, protection, development and participation. Through their many projects, they’ve met some amazing young people, like Saynab.

Saynab is 16 years old and lives in Somalia. She was married at age 14 and became pregnant shortly thereafter. “Our parents arranged our marriage. It was going well during my pregnancy until I reached the delivery date when I got seriously ill. I delivered a dead baby at the hospital. I think I would have delivered normally if I got married at an older age. I faced many challenges in my marriage life and I regret a lot about it.”

Across Somalia, approximately 45% of girls face child, early and forced marriages. Thanks to Save the Children – with support from the Government of Canada – Saynab recently returned to school and is excited to start her life afresh.

Monthly Donors Making a Big Impact!

Our donors who choose to donate to the Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF), previously known as the Emergency Response Fund, are making a difference every day.

In 2015, the CHAF responded to 7 crises and helped approximately 80 000 people by allocating $ 2.8 million. Over the course of this summer, our members were able to respond to four disasters in four different countries.

This fund is an innovative humanitarian mechanism between Global Affairs Canada, the Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies. It allows the member agencies to respond quickly and help people affected by smaller-scale, rapid-onset disasters, which receive very little global media attention, where there are unmet needs and/or gaps and where assistance is particularly difficult to finance.
