Humanitarian Needs
On the morning of June 8, 2026, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao, an island in the southern Philippines. It was the most powerful earthquake to strike the Philippines since 1990, displacing thousands of families and causing extensive damage to critical infrastructure including homes, schools, roads, bridges, power grids and healthcare facilities.
Humanitarian Response
Oxfam has delivered vital humanitarian assistance in the Philippines for more than 35 years. Their work encompasses key sectors including food security, WASH, shelter, gender, protection, and cash programming.
In response to the earthquake, Oxfam Canada is distributing hygiene and water kits, emergency shelter kits and other essential items like blankets, mosquito nets and solar lamps. Oxfam is also offering community-based sessions about gender and protection, as well as providing psychosocial support for children and adults.
