The Government of Canada’s extension to its matching fund until February 29, 2016 for the Syrian Refugee Crisis means more vulnerable people will be able to receive life-saving support.
The government has pledged to match up to $100 million of Canadians donations to this cause, and this extension underscores its commitment to providing relief to those affected by the Syrian crisis. However, it also indicates that more is needed from Canadians and humanitarian organizations in order to reach that goal.
Working together, the Humanitarian Coalition and its members are ready to take up the government’s challenge and meet the needs of vulnerable Syrians, whether they are still in Syria or refugees in neighbouring countries.
The Humanitarian Coalition and its member agencies have raised more than $2.5 million collectively. These funds have helped us provide life-saving assistance to more than 2 million people.
Coalition members are dispensing vital supplies such as shelter, water, food, shoes, clothing, blankets, and medicines to people in Syria and neighbouring countries (including Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, the Balkans, Greece, Italy and Iraq). As well, they are creating safe spaces for children, providing mental health care, counselling and psychosocial support, particularly to children and women, and creating improved access to formal and non-formal education in a safe learning environment for school-aged children.
Canadians can take advantage of the matching fund by donating to the Humanitarian Coalition.
