Middle East Emergency Appeal: Humanitarian Aid Update

As conflict escalates in the Middle East, civilians are facing displacement, injury and disrupted access to food, water and health care – often for the second or third time in recent years. Humanitarian Coalition members are already on the ground delivering life-saving support in some of the most affected areas including Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank.

In Lebanon, where more than 1 million people are now displaced, our members are helping families who left home with little or nothing. They’re providing essentials like food, safe drinking water, blankets and mattresses. These are just a few examples of our members’ work:

  • Save the Children is installing and maintaining temporary shelters and sanitary facilities, as well as offering support for women, girls and infants in overcrowded displacement sites.

  • World Vision is distributing hot meals, blankets, mattresses and hygiene kits alongside other early response activities. They’ve reached more than 150,000 people, including more than 50,000 children.

  • Islamic Relief is providing ready-to-eat meals, hygiene kits and drinking water.

To help people cope with injury, illness and trauma, our members are delivering mobile and community-based health care, nutrition support and mental health services. Our collective response includes:

  • Canadian Lutheran World Relief’s partners have mobilized medical teams to provide consultations, distribute medications and refer urgent cases. They also have teams providing psychological first aid and supporting children, families and vulnerable groups.

  • Action Against Hunger is supporting 111 shelters and 6 hospitals with clean water, food, health services and more.

Keeping people safe is another critical part of the response. Our member agencies are providing protection services such as child-friendly activities and support for survivors of violence, focusing on people who are most at risk during a crisis. These protection activities include:

  • CARE and its partners are providing protection services prioritizing women, girls, older people, people with disabilities and marginalized communities. They plan to reach nearly 199,000 people with these and other services over the next three months.

  • Oxfam and its local partners are helping protect displaced communities by providing case management and referrals for children separated from their families and survivors of gender-based violence.

To help families meet their most urgent priorities with dignity, Humanitarian Coalition members are also providing emergency cash and vouchers. Here are some examples:

  • Plan International and its partners have reached 37,000 people with emergency cash, hygiene kits and food baskets.

  • Canadian Foodgrains Bank is providing food assistance in the form of cash, vouchers and in-kind food.

Together, Humanitarian Coalition members are supporting hundreds of thousands of people in collective shelters, hospitals, and host communities. We need your support to keep scaling up our responses as displacement and humanitarian needs continue to grow. Visit together.ca to donate.
