Smaller Disasters

Disasters are frequent, little-known, and devastating. And they are occurring more often due to climate change. They may not be newsworthy but these "small" disasters are big enough to overwhelm a country's response capacity.

When that happens, the Humanitarian Coalition is there. Around the clock. Around the world.

Millions of people are impacted by disasters every year

Here are some of their stories:

When floods tore through her neighbourhood in late 2023, Lisaura lost more than household items – she lost her children’s sense of safety, her own sense of control, and the small comforts of everyday life. But when she received a cash voucher, it brought something back: stability. "That help, helped me buy food for my family, and with the savings I generated, I could replace household items that I had lost in the floods," she said.

“My son, Abdel Malek, is in good health now,” says Yousra.

In the midst of a worsening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, nutrition support helped Yousra protect her children’s health and learn new ways to care for them, even in extremely difficult conditions. With support from the Government of Canada through the Humanitarian Coalition, Action Against Hunger provided Yousra with targeted nutrition support and practical guidance, helping her meet the urgent needs of her young children.

But that support came after a harrowing journey.

Thanks to CARE Canada, Batula received life-saving cash assistance to help provide for her family's urgent needs.
